NEW YORK — Clay Shirky believes LOL Cats serve an important purpose in society: they help people cross the gulf between doing nothing and doing something.
“Whoever’s made a LOL cat has already crossed that gulf,” he told an audience at the 2010 Wired Business Conference. “Someone has taken a cute cat and made it cuter by adding a cute caption and shared it with the world,” he said.
Yes, it’s a stupid act, but it’s still a creative act. The leap from do nothing to doing something is the biggest.
Shirky believes cognitive surplus has been revolutionary for society. It has led to an explosion of novel breakthroughs in science, literature, art, politics, and “lots and lots of LOL cats,” he said.
